Expert Reviews & Ratings
Data verified July 11, 2026 Β· Reviewed by SmartFinPro Research Β· How we test
Dual ASIC licences dating back to 1996, 12,000+ tradable instruments, no minimum deposit, and the cleanest regulatory record among the seven brokers reviewed here: that combination puts CMC Markets at the top. High-volume traders chasing the lowest cost per trade should look at Interactive Brokers instead, whose commission-based pricing is genuinely low for frequent, high-volume trading. Pepperstone, meanwhile, spans the widest range of platforms (MT4, MT5 and cTrader) and disclosed a 2023 compliance matter that it self-reported and has since fully remediated.
How we test CFD Trading Platforms
We compare each platform's instrument range, leverage caps, minimum deposit, platform choice and consumer rating from official sources and ASIC's own regulatory record, cross-checked against independent review platforms. CFD spreads across these 7 providers are quoted in genuinely incompatible units (index points, floating spreads, or a real percentage commission). Rather than manufacture a misleading single cost figure, we show each provider's real pricing model as text and let you compare like-for-like within your own trading style. Regulatory and legal history is sourced from ASIC media releases and Federal Court filings and disclosed plainly, including active/unresolved matters: a disclosed, resolved compliance issue is described differently from an active, ongoing one. Rankings never depend on commissions; every provider on this page is currently a visit-only listing.
What to look for
ASIC leverage caps on CFDs
ASIC's product intervention order (in force since March 2021, extended through at least 2027) caps retail CFD leverage at 30:1 on major FX pairs, 20:1 on minor FX pairs, gold and major stock indices, 10:1 on other commodities and minor indices, 5:1 on shares, and 2:1 on crypto-assets. This is down from up to 500:1 before the order. All 7 providers here operate under these caps for AU retail clients.
What the retail-loss disclosure means
ASIC-licensed CFD issuers must disclose what percentage of their own retail clients lost money over a recent period. ASIC's own January 2026 sector review found 68% of retail CFD investors lost money in FY2024 industry-wide, totaling over $458 million including $73 million in fees. That is a useful benchmark against any single provider's published figure. We show a provider's own number only where independently confirmed; otherwise we say so rather than guess.
Reading disclosed legal and regulatory history honestly
Two providers on this page carry active, unresolved legal matters: IC Markets faces a consolidated Federal Court class action over past CFD sales practices, and eToro is the subject of ASIC's first Design and Distribution Obligations Federal Court enforcement action, with no judgment in either case as of publication. We disclose both factually in the detail view and do not rank either as a top pick while unresolved. Separately, Pepperstone's 2023 leverage-cap breach was self-reported and fully remediated under ASIC oversight, a materially different (resolved) situation we describe accordingly.
Spread-based vs. commission-based pricing
Most providers here price CFDs into the spread (the buy/sell price gap) with no separate commission. Interactive Brokers instead charges a low, transparent percentage commission with tighter raw pricing, usually cheaper for high-volume traders, but its Trader Workstation platform has a steeper learning curve than the proprietary apps most other providers offer.
