Quick Verdict

Our in-depth review of the AJ Bell Youinvest Stocks and Shares ISA covering fees, fund range, ready-made portfolios, and platform features. The best balance.

What We Love

  • Competitive platform fee of 0.25% — significantly lower than Hargreaves Lansdown
  • Good fund range with 2,000+ funds plus individual shares and ETFs
  • Ready-made portfolios (Dodl) for hands-off investors at lower cost
  • Share dealing at £5 per trade — less than half of HL's £11.95
  • Tax-free growth within the £20,000 annual ISA allowance

Watch Out For

  • Share dealing fee of £5 per trade adds up for frequent traders
  • Research tools and analyst coverage less comprehensive than Hargreaves Lansdown
  • Platform fee of 0.25% still higher than Vanguard (0.15%) for fund-only investors
  • Two separate apps (AJ Bell and Dodl) can be confusing

Frequently Asked Questions

The AJ Bell Stocks and Shares ISA uses the standard UK ISA allowance of £20,000 per tax year (2025/26). This is shared across all ISA types — Cash ISA, Stocks and Shares ISA, Lifetime ISA (up to £4,000), and Innovative Finance ISA. You can split the allowance between providers but cannot exceed £20,000 total across all ISAs.
AJ Bell charges a platform fee of 0.25% per year on funds (reducing to 0.10% above £250,000). For shares, ETFs, and investment trusts, the platform fee is capped at £42 per year. Share dealing costs £5 per trade (£3.50 for regular monthly investments). You will also pay the underlying fund charges (OCFs) on top of the platform fee.
AJ Bell Youinvest is the full-service platform offering 2,000+ funds, individual shares, ETFs, and investment trusts with comprehensive tools. Dodl by AJ Bell is a simplified app-based experience with a curated selection of funds and ready-made portfolios, designed for beginners and hands-off investors. Both use the same ISA allowance.
Yes. AJ Bell Securities Limited is authorised and regulated by the FCA (reference number 155197). Your investments are protected by FSCS up to £85,000 per person if AJ Bell were to fail. Client assets are held separately from AJ Bell's own company assets in nominee accounts.
Yes. The AJ Bell ISA allows you to buy individual company shares from the UK (London Stock Exchange), US (NYSE and NASDAQ), and selected international markets. Share dealing costs £5 per trade, or £3.50 per deal for regular monthly share purchases.
Yes. You can transfer Cash ISAs and Stocks and Shares ISAs from other providers to AJ Bell. In-specie transfers (where your existing holdings are moved without selling) are available for most funds and shares. Transfers typically take 15-30 working days and preserve your ISA tax-free status.
Yes. AJ Bell offers a Lifetime ISA for those aged 18-39, with contributions of up to £4,000 per year and a 25% government bonus (up to £1,000/year). The LISA allowance is part of your overall £20,000 ISA allowance. It can be used for a first home purchase (up to £450,000) or accessed from age 60.
AJ Bell's Favourite Funds list is their curated selection of recommended investments across different asset classes. Similar to HL's Wealth Shortlist, these are funds chosen by AJ Bell's investment team for their quality, value, and long-term potential. The list includes both active and passive fund options.
