Frequently Asked Questions

The Hargreaves Lansdown Stocks and Shares ISA uses the standard UK ISA allowance of £20,000 per tax year (2025/26). This allowance is shared across all ISA types — Cash ISA, Stocks and Shares ISA, Lifetime ISA (up to £4,000), and Innovative Finance ISA. You can split the £20,000 between different ISA types but cannot exceed the total.
HL charges a platform fee of 0.45% per year on funds (reducing to 0.25% on holdings between £250,000-£1m, and 0.1% above £1m). For shares, ETFs, and investment trusts, the platform fee is capped at £45 per year. Share dealing costs £11.95 per trade (reduced to £5.95 if you made 10+ trades the previous month).
Yes. Hargreaves Lansdown is authorised and regulated by the FCA (reference number 115248). Your investments are protected by FSCS up to £85,000 per person if HL were to fail. Client assets are held in nominee accounts separate from HL's own company assets.
Yes. Unlike fund-only platforms such as Vanguard, the HL ISA allows you to buy individual company shares from the UK (London Stock Exchange), US (NYSE and NASDAQ), and selected European markets. Share dealing costs £11.95 per trade or £5.95 for frequent traders.
The Wealth Shortlist is HL's curated list of fund recommendations selected by their in-house research team. These are funds that HL's analysts believe have the potential to outperform over the long term. The list is updated regularly and covers all major asset classes and investment styles.
Yes. You can transfer Cash ISAs and Stocks and Shares ISAs from other providers to HL. Cash transfers typically take 15-30 working days. Stock transfers where HL can hold the same investments (in-specie transfers) preserve your holdings without selling and rebuying. Transferring preserves your ISA tax-free status.
Yes. The Hargreaves Lansdown Stocks and Shares ISA is a flexible ISA. This means if you withdraw money during the tax year, you can replace it within the same tax year without it counting towards your £20,000 annual allowance. Not all ISA providers offer this feature.
Yes. HL offers a Lifetime ISA (LISA) for those aged 18-39, allowing contributions of up to £4,000 per year with a 25% government bonus (up to £1,000/year). The LISA allowance is part of your overall £20,000 ISA allowance. It can be used towards a first home purchase (up to £450,000) or accessed from age 60.
